Beyond Baubles - 10 Simple Ways to Give your Christmas Tree a Fresh Look
Every Christmas tells a different story.
One year you may love timeless reds and golds. The next you might be inspired by warm natural textures, dramatic tropical florals or rich jewel tones. The good news is that you don't need to replace your entire collection every year. A few carefully chose additions can completely transform a tree you already own.
After decorating thousands of Christmas trees over the past fourteen years, we've found that it's often the unexpected details that make people stop and look twice.

Choose a Colour Story
Rather than shopping for individual decorations, begin with a colour palette.
This year's inspiration might be:
- warm bronze, copper and champagne
- traditional red with antique gold
- soft ivory and natural wood
- tropical pink, orange and purple
- forest green with velvet ribbon
- black, gold and rich botanical textures
Once your palette is decided, every decoration feels intentional.
Ribbon Changes Everything
Perhaps the single biggest transformation comes from ribbon.
Wide velvet ribbon, woven fabric, embroidered ribbon or luxurious wired ribbon creates movement throughout the tree and fills larger spaces beautifully.
Instead of wrapping ribbon evenly around the tree, weave it in gentle waves, allowing it to disappear and reappear naturally between the branches. Use inner branches to secure.
Think Beyond Baubles
Some of our favourite decorations aren't traditional ornaments at all.
We've used:
- handmade paper flowers
- velvet leaves and metallic foliage picks
- fabric flowers
- decorative branches
- bells
- feather stems
- dried botanicals
These create depth and give the tree a layered, professionally styled appearance.
Add Personal Touches
Some of the most memorable decorations cost almost nothing.
One of our favourite ideas was printing pages from The Nutcracker Suite onto A4 paper, rolling them into scrolls and tying them with ribbon before tucking them into the branches.
We've also made paper flowers, added handcrafted ornaments and incorporated meaningful keepsakes collected during family holidays.
These personal touches often become the decorations everyone remembers.
Decorate Beyond the Tree
Carry your chosen theme throughout the room.
Coordinate wreaths, garland, bows, candles and tabletop decorations using the same colours and materials. Even a simple wreath with a beautiful velvet bow helps creative a cohesive festive space.
